What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal instrument which allows a person who is at least 21 years of age (‘donor’), to voluntarily appoint one or more persons (‘donee(s)’) to make decisions and act on his behalf should he lose mental capacity one day.
A donee can be appointed to act in two broad areas:
- Personal welfare matters (healthcare, living arrangements, day-to-day decisions).
- Property and affairs matters (managing bank accounts, CPF, investments, property).
Benefits of making an LPA
- Choose your own decision-maker: You decide who will act for you, not the court.
- Protect your family from stress: Loved ones avoid the need for a costly and time-consuming Deputyship application.
- Peace of mind: Ensure your wishes are respected if you become unable to decide for yourself.
Why Should You Get an LPA
Without an LPA, your family must apply for a Deputyship Order to manage your affairs. This process:
- Can take several months to complete.
- Involves significant legal fees and stress.
- Leaves it up to the Court to appoint a Deputy — who may not be your preferred choice.
An LPA ensures your family can act quickly and smoothly without unnecessary delays.
Cost of Making an LPA
- Application fee waiver: For Singapore Citizens, the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) has extended the waiver of the $75 application fee until 31 March 2026.
- Professional fees: Engaging an LPA Certificate Issuer (such as a lawyer, psychiatrist, or accredited doctor) typically starts from $300.
At PKWA Law, our fees are fixed, clear, and transparent. We also offer a special package:
- $790 for both your Will and your LPA (usual fee $1,000).
LPA Form 1 vs Form 2 – Which One Should You Use?
LPA Form 1: Grants general powers with basic restrictions. This is the most popular LPA Form. An overwhelming majority 98% of Singapore citizens use LPA Form 1.
LPA Form 2: This is rarely used as it grants customised powers, and must be drafted by a qualified Singapore lawyer.
Special Promotion
Take advantage of our promotional rate of $790 when you do your will together with your LPA.
