Q: What is probate in Singapore?

Probate is the legal process of confirming the validity of a will and giving authority to the executor named in the will to manage and distribute the deceased’s estate. Without probate, banks and institutions will not release the deceased’s assets.

Q: What happens if someone dies without a will?

If a person passes away without leaving a will , their family must apply for Letters of Administration. This gives an administrator the legal right to manage and distribute the estate. Assets will be distributed according to the Intestate Succession Act, unless the deceased was Muslim, in which case Islamic inheritance laws apply.

Q: How much does probate cost in Singapore?

The cost depends on the value and complexity of the estate. Most law firms will charge between $1,500 to $4,000 for a simple uncontested probate. We offer transparent and fixed fee pricing for probate.

Q: Who can apply for probate or letters of administration?

If there is a will , the executor named in the will applies for probate. If there is no will , close family members can apply for Letters of Administration. The law sets out an order of priority, starting with the spouse and children, then parents, siblings, and other relatives.
