Ground for divorce

Under Singapore divorce law, the only ground for a divorce is on the basis of ‘irreconcilable breakdown of marriage’.  This can be based on either adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion for more than 2 years, 3 years’ separation with the other party’s consent or 4 years separation.

 .

How long does divorce take in Singapore?

 .This is how long a typical divorce case takes in Singapore: .

  • If it is a simplified uncontested divorce – about 4 months (1 month to obtain Interim Judgement and another 3 months to obtain Final Judgment).

  • If it is a contested divorce & successful mediation – about 6 months.

  • If it is a contested divorce & unsuccessful mediation – about 1 year.

  • Percentage of cases that are resolved within 6 months – 90% to 95%.
